about billy hume

Billy Hume is a Grammy-winning, gold and platinum awarded music producer, mixer, composer, artist, and YouTuber with over 40 years of experience. His career has journeyed from being a touring musician in cover bands and as an independent performer, to a self-taught career as a recording engineer, to production, world-class mixing, and now videos and livestreaming.

Billy grew up in a military family and lived multiple places around the world. He became interested in music when he started drum lessons as a young teenager. After high school, he started touring with various bands, playing guitar and bass and learning all sorts of important lessons along the way. He built up enough gear for a small recording studio, and over time he grew and expanded both the studio and his skills as he recorded his own bands and other artists around Atlanta, Georgia.

Billy balanced a solo music career with recording and other jobs, until an unlikely series of events tipped him into the lap of the burgeoning rap and hip hop scene in Atlanta in the late ‘90s. Billy’s ability to adapt to any genre and yet still bring his unique sound to the table was a perfect fit for the time and place, and before he knew it he had recorded and mixed chart-topping hits with a number of well-known artists, including Bonecrusher, Lil Jon and the Eastside Boyz, the Ying Yang Twins, David Banner, Rich Boy, Nelly, and more. The work came from other corners of the music industry as well, from rock to singer/songwriter, film scoring, jazz to pop to country to metal. In 2017 he won a Grammy in bluegrass for the album “Laws of Gravity” with the Infamous Stringdusters. Billy quietly churned out world-class work from his unassuming studio north of Atlanta, The Zone, for years.

More recently Billy has turned his attention to YouTube, and his channel Freaking Out with Billy Hume has grown to nearly 100,000 subscribers. His videos reflect his own multi-faceted experiences in music, genre-blending storytelling with hard-won wisdom and technical knowledge. His livestreams on YouTube and Twitch are an opportunity to “join” Billy in the studio as he makes music, mixes for clients, shares knowledge, or just jumps into whatever else he feels like doing that day. Billy has also finally turned his attention back to his own original music, and is working on an album to be released in 2026. Between the videos and livestreams, ongoing studio work for select clients, consulting, his own music, and his family, Billy stays as frenetically busy as ever. Drop by the channel sometime and see what he has going on!
